Here you can view pictures of my work, the story of the scene and the design choices behind them.
Dead Containment - Level 1 Lobby
The end of level 1 takes place in a lobby, where large hordes of enemies stand between the player and the doors to the exit. I wanted this area to feel like the last push for the player before they can leave the claustrophobic interior of the skyscraper and reach the open streets of the city. The lobby is open and spacious, removing the claustrophobia found in the tight hallways of the rest of the level. The wall of windows lets the sunlight in, filling the lobby with warm rays of light, signifying to the player they are almost at the end of the level. Note: The enemies in the background are using lower LOD vlaues as this picture was taken very early on in development.
Dead Containment - HUD
Dead Containment is based off the old arcade games where a player or 2 can pick up a light gun and shoot enemies on the screen. I wanted to try and capture that experience in themain HUD ingame while presenting information clearly. The top corners show the players score along with their ammo underneath, shown as 3D bullets. Hit markers are shown when the player has taken damage, with the marker being offset towards the hit player. The bottom corners show the players lives, their weapon loadout along with their selected weapon. I wanted both players to share a HUD while on multiplayer to bring that old arcade experience to modern day online gaming.
Dead Containment - Level 2 Streets
The second level of Dead Containment opens with the sun setting and the players now outside in the open city streets. I wanted the scene to be dark and gloomy, a juxtaposition to the tone of the first level. I also had to keep the environment bright enough so players could still see their soundings. I achieved this by using global illumination with the light from the moon to fill the darker areas where artificial light couldn't reach. The rest of the light comes from light sources one would find in a city; street lights, car lights and buildings lights.
